As humans we desire perfection, the beautiful in our own mind that differs from person to person. That in turn pushes us subconsciously to poses certain objects, to operate things a certain way, to take control. If we have power over something, we control every aspect and create the perfection we desire so much. Things almost never go as planned and sometimes the end goal is never met or turn out the way we planned. Control is the reason humans feel the need to plan everything.

I use a machine to create my sculptures called a CNC Plasma. The machine is programed to make precision cuts and I can incorporate my own design by working outside the machines capabilities. I relinquish my control to a machine but get it back when I fix what it isn’t capable of doing or did wrong. Nature has its own form of perfectionism. It is known for its balance and revolving cycle. Nature will repair itself. Fungi play a large role in natures balance by breaking down elements that no longer function. It returns the nutrients from dead and dying things back to the soil so other plants and animals may benefit.

The number of humans inhabiting this planet is growing, they are moving into areas that were not previously inhabited. Humans are altering the eco systems balance and nature to fit their needs by cutting trees, changing the ground and sometimes altering a water source. This affects all the animals and plants that live in these areas, but we need to build our perfect home with the esthetics that we want.

Using patterns from fungi in these metal sculptures, I am trying to bring attention to the small things in nature that support most of its cycle. In changing these micro forms and making them macro, I want people to think about the little things in life. Every decision we make has an affect that then affects another and so on. Sometimes the small things can build to become a larger problem.
